Pioneering Projects for a Worthy Purpose
Technology to
Manage a House
Through collaborative efforts with Promixis, a national consultant in the field of assistive technology, the ALS and MS residences are equipped with PEAC, a state-of-the-art automation solution for palliative care that showcases how technology can be used to adapt to the needs of each individual.
PEAC allows a resident to access his or her own “command center,” composed of computerized sensors to open and close doors, turn lights on or off, and surf the web. As a result, ALS or MS residents are able to take the elevator to the lobby café, venture outdoors to the veranda, and order a cold drink from the lobby café via email.
Although these individuals will not have absolute freedom from their disease, this innovative technology will allow them as much independence and mobility as possible. The technology in the Leonard Florence Center is the capstone of this cutting-edge urban Green House.
In partnership with the Massachusetts Chapter of the ALS Association, the Leonard Florence Center for Living presents America’s only permanent residence dedicated to caring for individuals living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
A second residence within the ten-home community, developed in partnership with the Central New England Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is devoted to residents living with MS.
For residents of all ages living with ALS or MS, the state-of-the-art homes combine technology with compassionate delivery of care. Each 7,000-square-foot residence consists of ten private bedrooms with private handicapped accessible bath and shower, cutting-edge assistive technology, skilled staff, family-style kitchen, and fireplace hearth.
The Green House Difference
The vision for these specialized residences is based on the Green House® model, a unique concept intended to deinstitutionalize long-term care by eliminating large nursing facilities and creating a home within a community setting.
The goal of the ALS and MS Green House residences is to design and develop smart houses that promote and support independence, regardless of the stage of the illness. Due to the unique architecture and small footprint of each Green House, wheelchair-bound individuals have independent mobility with meaningful choices and dignity.
